Development Director

Opera Theater of Pittsburgh announces a search for the full-time position of Development Director. The Development Director will report to the General Manager and the General and Artistic Director, and to the Board. Strong development skills and experience in the nonprofit world are a pre-requisite; candidate must have excellent writing skills, database management experience, a capability to manage time and priorities, and strong interpersonal skills. An appreciation of opera and the performing arts is preferred. Salary and generous benefits package commensurate with experience; salary expected to be in the high $40s, additional benefits package includes health (medical, dental, vision) and pension. Primary Job Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and implement strategic fundraising plans
  • Write foundation and government grants
  • Craft corporate proposals
  • Create revenue projections
  • Manage major donor cultivation
  • Coordinate two annual appeals
  • Administer donor appreciation program
  • Supervise work of Development Intern
  • Management of database
  • Work closely with Chairman of Development Committee of the Board
  • Produce Annual Report
  • Attend all major production events and cultivate donor prospects
  • Additional development duties as assigned

Opera Theater has a small and dedicated full-time staff who work in a collegial and collaborative atmosphere in its offices in Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh. The offices are located in a community center offering free parking, a free gym and child care facilities. The company has a long history of successful development, with excellent relations with the Pittsburgh foundation community and a loyal group of individual supporters. The Company views the Development Director as a key staff member, and he or she is encouraged to have a major say in other areas of the company’s operations, from strategic planning to marketing and creative business solutions.  The company’s leadership supports the Development Director significantly, collaborating to set realistic and achievable goals and participating as needed in development activities. A Development Intern provides additional assistance. 

With an annual budget of $750,000, OTP is nationally recognized as a producer of innovative and contemporary operas. Opera Theater’s primary performing activities take place during SummerFest, a three-week festival of opera, musical theater, concert and cabaret performances. These are produced each July in the beautiful Art Deco spaces of Pittsburgh’s Twentieth Century Club.  

Opera Theater crosses boundaries in the arts, seeking to reach out to new, younger, and more diverse audiences. Opera Theater performs almost exclusively in English, with an emphasis on new works, American works, and traditional works performed in innovative ways. Additional programming events during the year include The Mildred Miller International Voice Competition, the SummerFest Europe International Voice Competition in Belgium, and extensive educational programs, including the "Opera Tots!" preschool program, middle and high school educational initiatives, and a summer Young Artists Training Program.
