Some 150 guests joined Opera Theater on Saturday, April 25, 2015, for A Deco Affair: Puttin' on the Ritz!, an evening of 1920s-style entertainment in the sparkling Art Deco venue, The Twentieth Century Club (4201 Bigelow Blvd in Oakland), with celebrity MC Jon Burnett of KDKA-TV. The event benefits Opera Theater's education programming.
“Giggle Water” (cocktails) and hors d'oeuvres began at 6:30pm, with live music by “Harlem stride” pianist Tom Roberts, followed by luscious desserts and a captivating floor show and auction.
Entertainment continued after dinner with opera gems and popular songs from the ‘20s and ‘30s, along with Tango and Charleston dance demos. Jon Burnett, joined by Artistic Director Jonathan Eaton, presented a funny and heartwarming tribute to opera to kick off the bidding on stunning one-of-a-kind auction items, including unique getaways, estate jewelry and art pieces. The evening concluded with dancing to a swinging, live band.
Here's a quick recap of some of the fantastic auction items available for bidding:
- From Joden Jewelers: an exquisite pearl choker with amethyst and rose diamonds. Also, a sterling silver circa 1920 evening clutch purse.
- From downtown's newest and hottest boutique hotel, Hotel Monaco: an overnight stay and breakfast for 2 at the Commoner.
- From us at Opera Theater of Pittsburgh: a walk-on, costumed part in our Damn Yankees musical during SummerFest 2015?
