An exciting new international cultural enterprise launched in Verviers, Belgium in December 2013. For many years an internationally-recognized competition for identifying and rewarding young talent (once such winner was soprano Renée Fleming), the competition ceased in 2007. However, SummerFest Europe has revived the tradition, holding its first international singing competition at the Conservatoire de Verviers, Belgium, on 19-20 December 2013.
Young singers from across Europe, including advanced conservatory students and emerging professionals, came to Verviers to compete for five unique prizes: ‘all-expenses-paid’ trips for five young singers to travel to the USA and participate in the SummerFest 2014 Young Artists Program, and to take solo roles in festival opera productions. Performance activities will include singing in choruses in mainstage works, understudying solo roles, and since all works are sung in English, and rehearsals take place in English, European singers also get the advantage of working in an English language environment, and of meeting colleagues from across the United States, Canada and other countries.
