Working from a belief that singing provides an extraordinary method through which one can learn letters ("Now I know my ABCs..."), numbers, and more, Opera Theater's educational programs introduce students to voice types, rhythms, melodies, and movements, which combine to create vivid characters and exciting drama. We're now scheduling performances for local area schools for Winter 2016.
Little Red Riding Hood
for grades K-5
This production offers a superb introductory opera for young audiences and a natural vehicle for literature, vocabulary, history, and musical styles and genres. The student performances will take place at a local Pittsburgh venue in the last week of February 2016. The opera will then be revived as part of the company’s summer festival offerings in July 2016, with a performance each Saturday of the festival at 11:00 am. Don't miss this great opportunity for the whole family to enjoy opera together!
Participation for schools is completely free, thanks to our generous program sponsors at right.
The Education Program is comprised of the following elements:
Teacher’s Study Guide
Opera Theater provides teachers with materials to explore opera and Little Red Riding Hood.
Elementary School Workshops
Opera Theater provides elementary schools with classroom visits prior to the production, presenting excerpts of the work with a singer and pianist to students.
Student Matinee Performances
Free student matinees take place at 9:30 and 11:00 am, during the last week of February. Prior to the performances the director gives a talk to students, and the performance is be followed by a Q&A session with the artists.
